The 1st Local Stakeholder Workshop in Gżira

Gzira 28 February 2023
Co-designing nature-based solutions for the Triq Sliema street to improve air quality and urban heat island

On 24th February 2023, members of the Research Innovation Unit of the Gżira Local Council and members from the University of Malta conducted the first Local Stakeholders Workshop for the locality of Gżira under the patronage of the Mayor of Gżira, Dr Conrad Borg Manche. This workshop drew 20 residents, landscape architects, environmental consultants, and other experts from various fields of climate change and air quality research.

Architect Walter Portelli (Head of Implementation - Major Projects Infrastructure Malta) presented a work-in-progress street plan of Triq Sliema, the main pilot site of the JUSTNature project, which includes plans to accommodate the co-created and co-designed nature-based solutions for this street, during the final phase of the workshop. Members of the Environment Resource Authority (ERA) attended and provided their expertise to those in attendance.

During the workshop, the head of the Research Innovation Unit inaugurated the latest version of the interactive web application that exposes Malta Urban Heat Island. The Urban Heat Island phenomenon is one of the main burning questions being addressed by the JUSTNature project, which the city wants to overcome with nature-based solutions and a just transition.

We look forward to the next collaboration!
