Leuven’s Climate Street Pilot: From Temporary Setup to Lasting Transformation

Leuven 9 May 2025
The temporary intervention at C. Meunierstraat has informed a redesign of the street, co-created with residents!

In Leuven, our pilot in C. Meunierstraat has entered its second spring. Initially a temporary intervention to explore climate-friendly urban design, the pilot has now informed a comprehensive preliminary redesign of the street, developed in close collaboration with residents.

Following an in-depth evaluation at the end of 2024, which included traffic monitoring (via Telraam sensors) and community surveys, the project team translated both technical insights and local input into an ambitious climate street concept. The new design introduces one-way traffic, a traffic filter, and a reduction in on-street parking. These changes create space for nature and community use.

Key outcomes of the design include:

  • 23% of the street transformed into green space (previously 0%)
  • 40% of the surface made water-permeable to support rainwater infiltration
  • Dedicated space both above and below the surface at every intersection for “future-proof trees” capable of growing for over a century

On 29 April 2025, the draft design was presented to local residents during a community workshop (Atelier Meunier), where participants were invited to give feedback. This input will now inform the final design, scheduled for implementation in 2026.

Accessibility has also been a key focus. On 30 April 2025, the design was reviewed by the Accessibility Advisory Council of the City of Leuven, following an earlier site visit. The council’s detailed feedback has provided valuable guidance to ensure that the street remains inclusive and accessible for all, with the integration of Nature-based Solutions and extensive greenery.

This pilot illustrates how co-creation, inclusivity, and nature-based climate resilience can go hand in hand in urban transformation —core values at the heart of the JUSTNature project!
