Bolzano: the green roof is completed!

A rooftop meadow for biodiversity in Bolzano

No, we are not in a park. We are on Via Lancia, on the roof of the Seab headquarters. Here there is a meadow, shelters for birds and bats and even an apiary.

Thus the municipality of Bolzano, together with Merano, is joining the European project JUSTNature, which aims to offer cities solutions to combat global warming and promote biodiversity. The building in Via Lancia was not chosen at random, says Silvia Zanolin, EURAC's project manager.

Cost 125 thousand euro: funded by the European Horizon 2020 research programme. And while it was at it, the municipality also installed solar panels at its own expense, outside the Just Nature project, which will cover 6 per cent of the energy needs, saving almost 120 thousand euro over 20 years.

Even a private individual can equip themselves with an ecological roof, explains Stephan Konder, deputy mayor of Bolzano.
