In October 2023, members of the local JUSTNature team from the Technical University of Munich and from GreenCity teamed up with the StadtOasen project to take part in the annual Klimaherbst festival. This year the focus of Klimaherbst was climate justice – a theme closely aligned with the JUSTNature project. On two separate days, we took the student-developed Lokomobil of the TU Munich for a ride. The mobile moderation kit can be pulled by a bike and transforms into a table and poster walls on site – the perfect tool for spontaneous citizen engagement. We spent a Friday afternoon with it in a courtyard belonging to cultural centre and home for refugees Bellevue di Monaco in Munich’s old town. Fun facts about green spaces and common topics of interest between all projects such as just access to green spaces were showcased.
In future, Bellevue will be the site of a temporary greening intervention as part of JUSTNature, and this was a great opportunity to see how the space is used in many and varied ways. We invited passers-by to tell us how they currently use the space and what they would like to be able to do there in the future. They could also add to a digital map of oases in the city of Munich and share their experience with formal channels for participating in urban development via an online survey. We were also visited by the summer school of the Chair of Transportation Systems Engineering at TU Munich. This year, students look at science communication methods and at examples of living labs. They were able to observe how JUSTNature works to inform about environmental justice and include citizens in related design choices.
