Planting event with women at Bellevue di Monaco

Munich 19 May 2025
Women met at Bellevue di Monaco to plant together herbs and shade perennials during the Frauencafe as part of the JUSTNature project

Women with and without refugee backgrounds meet every Wednesday evening at Bellevue di Monaco's Women's Café (Frauencafe) in Munich to get to know each other better, practise German, share a meal for no cost (cooked by volunteers) and support each other. As part of the JUSTNature project, the City of Munich together with the Technical University of Munich and WOW! Urbane Utopien, held a planting event in the courtyard during the Frauencafe to bring urban nature and different cultures closer together.

On the evening of May 13th 2025, the women planted herbs and shade perennials and built insect hotels with the children. The families chatted, cooked together and swapped clothes while their children ran around and played.

“I love fresh air and plants, it's really fun,” said one of the gardeners happily. Another: “I'm so looking forward to sitting outside with the others and enjoying the atmosphere”. The women talked about the plants, recognized some of them, discussed whether they were edible and what could be prepared from them.

“We have to talk to the refugee women and not just about them,” emphasized Britta Coy, organizer of the Women's Café and head of JUNO - an organisation that works with women with and without refugee backgrounds, providing a voice for refugee women.

We hope that the planting action has brought a little more greenery and cohesion to this valuable community.
