Over the course of three weeks in April 2025, 5th grade students from St. Anna Secondary School in Munich took part in a planting activity in their newly transformed schoolyard. Whilst the students had already planted some greenery last autumn, more was both requested and needed. The activity was carried out as part of their school course on Nature and Technology.

The session began with a discussion on the role of plants in the context of a changing climate and increasingly hotter cities. Afterwards, the groups of 10-year-olds visited three “stations.” Stop 1 was all about replacing and adding plants in spots where those planted in autumn had not survived the winter or had been damaged during play. More resilient berry shrubs took their place, promising tasty snacks for the summer. Stop 2 had the pupils planting climbing plants along the open-air classroom and creating plant pots out of newspaper. Stop 3 gave each class the chance to plant vegetable seeds in their own raised bed. We hope they will be able to harvest some fresh vegetables during the Sustainable Food Week in July!

School curricula offer lots of opportunities to connect with nature – from Biology to Physics, to Art, and beyond. We are delighted to see that JUSTNature’s efforts to transform the schoolyard into a greener space provide the perfect scenario to carry them out! Raising awareness of the value of nature has no age limit! Our local team will continue working with the schools to exchange ideas and test new approaches within everyday courses.
